Wallah, shopping in Dubai when you’re plus-size and African is a joke. You walk into Dubai Mall, size 18, full bust, curves, looking for real Ankara. The sales girl smiles, brings you “free size.” Yaani, free size for who? It fits over my head OR my curves. Never both. I leave empty-handed. Again.
But I’ve lived in JLT 6 years, I’m a size 20, and I’m tired of “African inspired” polyester from Dragon Mart that sticks to my skin by the time I hit the parking lot. So here’s what actually works in this 45°C heat.
Important: Check reviews. Zoom in. Read the cm. Not L, XL, “free size.” And please, please check returns. Some sellers in Deira will fight you if you try return wax print.
1. That “Ankara” at the mall is lying to you
Real wax print is 100% cotton. What they sell you for 200 AED near Gold Souk? Polyester. You sweat walking to your car and it goes stiff. Like cardboard. In July humidity, you’ll itch the whole time at Zabeel Park.
What to do: Buy fabric, not the dress. Unless the tag says “hip 145cm, bust 135cm,” don’t trust it. Look for “6 yards 100% cotton wax.” That’s enough for a full boubou + headwrap when you’re 3XL+. 3 yards is a lie — that’s for skinny girls.

For curves: Boubou is your best friend. No waist = no digging after shawarma. Wrap dresses too, you tie it how YOU want. Avoid bodycon Ankara unless it says “stretch.” That stiff wax will not go over 125cm hips. I tried. Ripped it. Khallas.
2. Dubai AC will betray your outfit
You’re curvy, so you run hot. You step out of 45°C Deira into 19°C Mall of the Emirates. Your sweat turns cold. That fake polyester Ankara? Now it’s a cold, stiff board on your skin. You can’t even sit.
What works: Cotton. Or at least cotton-lined. “Ankara dress with lining” saves you. If it’s not lined, wear a long slip underneath. Trust me. For work, get “African print blazer” but check if it’s lined — otherwise you’ll stick to it by 10am. Modal blends are better than pure wax for AC. They actually move.

Big bust tip: Buttons = gaps. Go for wrap, dashiki, or peplum with ties. Big hips tip: Mermaid skirts or six-piece skirts. They flare after the hips so you can walk without the slit riding up to your waist at Dubai Metro.
3. Where to actually BUY this stuff, not “inspired” nonsense
Mall stores = “tribal print” from China. You want Nigerian, Ghanaian, Kenyan. Here’s where I actually go:
- Deira Textile Souk: Ask for “Hollandais” or “Veritable Wax.” Bring a friend. They’ll try sell you 3 yards. Say “No, I’m 3XL, I need 6.” Price: 15-30 AED per yard.
- Karama tailors: Take your fabric. Say “Please, no tight arms. Bust 135cm, hip 145cm. I need to EAT.” Show a photo of a boubou. Stitching: 80-150 AED.
- Global Village: Nov to April only. African pavilion has real sellers. Try it on there. Lighting is trash so check seams.
- Online: Amazon.ae, Noon. Filter “Prime” so you can return. Search “African plus size,” not just “African.”
Tailor tip: Don’t let them “take it in.” African style is loose. Tell them “If I can’t lift my arm to pay in the taxi, it’s too tight.”
4. Headwraps in this humidity = you need a strategy
YouTube makes gele look easy. 2 minutes. Lies. In JLT humidity, I spend 20 minutes, I’m sweating, and it slides off before I reach the lobby.
You need grip. Get a “wig grip band” or cotton underscarf. And size matters, 2m x 1m. That short 1.5m scarf will not cover braids or natural hair. It’ll look like a headband. “Pre-tied gele” is fine but check “head 58cm+.” My head is big. Most are small.

Curvy girl rule: Big wrap balances big body. Tiny scarf makes your shoulders look huge. Go big or go home.
5. Modest + African print? Yes, you can do both
Love off-shoulder Ankara but you live in Sharjah? Or work government? You don’t hide, you modify.
Buy the “high neck Ankara” or “long sleeve dashiki.” If you love a crop top, wear a “mesh bodysuit long sleeve” under it. Looks like skin, but you’re covered. Off-shoulder dress? Get “detachable sleeves” from Amazon. Slit too high? Wear a “long slip skirt” under.

For us curvy girls: Wrap dresses are king. Nip at waist, cover bust, flow over hips. Peplum + maxi skirt set gives shape without cling. Avoid stiff shift dresses — no stretch = you can’t sit for majlis.
6. Shoes + bags need to match the outfit’s weight
Heavy boubou + tiny heels = you look off-balance. Bold kitenge + small clutch = the dress eats it.
Wide feet? Dubai swelling is real. Get “wide fit block heels.” 2 inch heel so you can actually walk Satwa. “Chunky bangles” balance wide hips. “Big earrings” pull the eye up.

Big hips tip: Ankle straps cut your leg. Get “V-cut” heels or “nude sandals” to look longer. Flats? “Pointed toe mules,” not round. Round toe + wide foot = clown foot.
7. Aso Ebi in Dubai will ruin you if you’re not careful
Cousin’s wedding. She picks pink lace. Tailor makes it bodycon. You’re hot, bust’s about to pop, can’t breathe after dinner. And the photos are forever.
Solution: Buy your OWN fabric in the same color. Take it to Karama. Ask for “corset back” or “side zip + stretch panel.” Corset = you can loosen after you eat. “Cold shoulder” = breeze, but still covered. If they force one style, get “A-line with stretch.” Fits bust + hip without squeezing.
Lace fabric by the yard plus size: Search on Amazon.ae or Corset African gown: Search on Amazon.ae
Back fat is real: Standard zippers gap. “Illusion back” or “lace-up” fits way better. And SIT in the dress before they hem it. If you can’t sit, you can’t eat at the wedding. Simple.
Real Dubai rule: Fit before print
A black dress that fits beats a tight Ankara every time. Measure yourself. Bust, waist, hip, arm. If the chart says “bust 120cm” and you’re 132cm, don’t “buy and alter.” Wax print doesn’t alter.
Do the “Dubai test”: Can you walk 1km in MoE? Sit in a low food court chair? Reach up in a taxi? Lift your arms? If it pulls or rides up, return it.
That’s it. That’s how we actually dress here — bold, covered when we need, cool enough to survive, and not in pain by Maghrib.
